US Standard Power Strip UL Certification Standards:
UL 498 Standard for Attachment Plugs and Receptacles
UL 1363 Standard for Relocatable Power Taps
Scope of Standards:
1. The UL 1363 standard covers indoor-use wire and plug connections and relocatable power taps (RPTs) with a rated value of 250 V AC or lower and 20 Amperes or less. RPTs may include Class 2 power supplies with integrated leads and/or connector outputs. According to the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) in the United States, RPTs are used as mobile power connections for electrical devices connected by wire and plug, and shall not be used as fixed wiring for structural or built-in furniture, such as but not limited to applications on permanent countertops in kitchens and bathrooms.
2. Power cords and plug-connected products with fewer than three outlets and equipped with lamps described in the UL1363 standard are covered by the portable lamp standard UL 153.
3. Power cords and plug-connected products with fewer than three outlets and using electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters described in the UL1363 standard are covered by the EMI filter standard UL 1283.
4. Power cords and plug-connected products with fewer than three outlets and using surge protective devices (SPD) described in the UL1363 standard are covered by Type 3 SPDs in the surge protective device standard UL 1449.
5. RPTs with more than two outlets using surge protective devices (SPD) as covered by the UL1363 standard must also comply with the applicable requirements for Type 3 SPDs for power cord connections in the surge protective device standard UL 1449.
6. Power cords and plug-connected products using ground-fault protection as described in the UL1363 standard are covered by the requirements for portable GFCIs in the ground-fault circuit interrupter standard UL 943.
7. The UL1363 standard does not cover RPTs, including medical devices that use hospital-grade receptacles or hospital-grade plugs (see 52.1). RPTs are not applicable for Class 2 (general patient care) spaces or Class 1 (critical patient care) spaces or near patient care in healthcare institutions.
8. The UL1363 standard does not cover products with cord and plug connections, healthcare facility outlet assemblies (HCOA), which are included in the outline of investigation for cord and plug connected healthcare facility outlet assemblies UL 2930. HCOAs are intended as movable power connections for cord and plug connected medical electrical equipment used in Class 2 (general patient care) spaces or Class 1 (critical patient care) spaces, including near patient care areas equipped with patient equipment grounding, in healthcare facilities.
9. The UL1363 standard does not cover cord and plug connected components, special purpose relocatable power taps (SPRPT), which are included in the outline of investigation for special purpose relocatable power taps UL 1363A. SPRPTs are distribution components intended to supply power to plug-connected assemblies of mobile equipment components mounted on racks, desktops, or bases. SPRPTs are intended to be used as components of a complete device submitted for investigation, rather than for direct standalone installation on site. SPRPTs should be part of the equipment assembly and may only be permanently connected to the equipment components by personnel qualified to assemble medical electrical equipment systems in accordance with Part 1: General Requirements for Basic Safety and Essential Performance, IEC 60601-1. SPRPTs are not suitable for use in patient care areas.
10. RPTs may use a complete cord reel for the power cord and connection plug. Cord reels with retractable sockets or cord connectors are included in the cord reel standard UL 355.
11. The UL1363 standard does not cover RPTs that have a work surface or are intended to support weight loads other than those specified in 6.16 for storing handheld electronic devices and charging devices (e.g., mobile phones, mobile phone chargers, etc.).
12. The UL1363 standard requires coverage of RPTs with isolated secondary circuits.
13. The UL1363 standard requires coverage of RPTs where the battery is located in an isolated secondary circuit. See UL 1363 Supplement sb - Relocatable Power Taps Incorporated Batteries.
14. Products with backup battery functions or other uninterruptible power devices located in the primary circuit should comply with the applicable requirements in the uninterruptible power supply standard UL 1778.
15. RPTs with three or more outlets may use light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures.
16. The requirements of the furniture power distribution device standard UL 962A cover wired and plug-connected products as described in 1.1 that are installed with tools on portable or fixed furniture.
